Super GT star Björn Wirdheim has been supplementing his slate of races with Gainer Mercedes-AMG in the GT300 class with a campaign in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship.
This weekend at Karlskoga Motorstadion in Örebro, the fully-bearded Wirdheim picked up his first win of the STCC season in his Flash Motorsports Saab 9-3.
Wirdheim survived a dodgy start ahead of him from fifth on the grid, moved into the lead early on, and never looked back once he got past polesitter Rasmus Mårthen to win by 16 seconds.
The victory is Wirdheim’s first in STCC, the first for his Flash Motorsports team in five years, and would you believe it, years after Saab’s last car rolled off the assembly line following their bankruptcy, Trollhättan’s finest badge still has some great racing life left in it.
It moves Wirdheim into fourth place in the STCC Drivers’ Championship, one place behind multi-discipline star Johan Kristofferson, two places behind Volvo racing legend Robert Dahlgren. This all despite Wirdheim not racing in the opening round of the season.
Back in Super GT, Wirdheim is ninth in the GT300 Drivers’ Championship with co-driver Katsuyuki Hiranaka. Two fourth-place finishes at Okayama and Sugo are the duo’s best finish in the #11 Gainer Tanax Mercedes-AMG GT3 this season.
