Team Taisan SARD announced on Monday that reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Japan champion, Tsubasa Kondo, will join the team for the Motegi GT Grand Final in November, making his debut in the Autobacs Super GT Series.
Kondo, the 2016 PCCJ champion, will partner Yuya Motojima, the 2015 PCCJ champion, in the #26 Taisan SARD Audi R8 LMS for the final two races of the 2016 season.
27-year-old Kondo, a native of Nagaoka, Niigata, enjoyed a magnificent championship season in 2016 for SKY Racing, winning eight out of ten races and clinching the title with one round to go on the weekend of the Suzuka 1000km. He is also racing in the ST-4 class of the Super Taikyu Endurance Series, where just last week in Okayama, he led the TC Corse team to their first-ever victory in the series with their Mazda Roadster.
Kondo replaces veteran Shogo Mitsuyama, who left Team Taisan SARD shortly after the Suzuka 1000km. Taisan SARD did not compete in the flyaway round in Buriram, Thailand, but they have enjoyed a fairly successful return year in Super GT so far, with an eighth-place finish at the Fuji 300km race in August.
Super GT rookie Motojima and his new co-driver Kondo have racked up quite the record in the last two seasons of Porsche Carrera Cup Japan competition: In 2015 and 2016, they’ve won 17 out of the last 20 races in the series!
