Unfortunately, the battle for the GT300 Championship will be down one team, as Autobacs Racing Team Aguri executive advisor confirmed that the #55 ARTA BMW M6 (Shinichi Takagi/Takashi Kobayashi) will not race in Sunday’s second and final race of the Motegi GT Grand Final.
Veteran driver Takagi was involved in a heavy crash on lap 3 of Saturday’s first race, after tangling with the #5 Mach Toyota 86 MC of Tetsuji Tamanaka approaching Turns 12 and 13. The impact ripped away most of the front of the BMW, but thankfully, Takagi was able to get out of the stricken car under his own power.
Tsuchiya confirmed that the team did not have enough spare parts to repair the car, certainly not in time for Sunday’s qualifying and final race. The “Drift King” thanked the team’s fans for their support this year, pledging their support for Sunday’s final race towards the GT500 class #8 ARTA NSX.
Takagi and Kobayashi will finish the season at 48 points, with a win at the Fuji 300km GT Race, three podiums, and two pole positions. The win at Fuji was the first for the new M6.
