Goodsmile Racing with Team UKYO announced today their 2017 entry into the Autobacs Super GT Series, continuing on with their Mercedes-AMG GT3, and retaining the veteran driver lineup of two-time GT300 champions Nobuteru Taniguchi and Tatsuya Kataoka.
Taniguchi and Kataoka are returning for their sixth season together aboard the Goodsmile Racing entry. They won the GT300 championship together in 2014 driving the BMW Z4 GT3, but the team have not win a race since switching to Mercedes-Benz in 2015.
They finished seventh in last year’s GT300 Drivers’ Championship, scoring podium finishes in Okayama and Motegi.
GSR will continue to run Yokohama Advan tyres on their Mercedes-AMG GT3.
Ukyo Katayama, the famous veteran of six Formula 1 seasons and himself a former Super GT driver, will continue to serve as team director under owner Takanori Aki, with Takao Kohno returning as chief engineer. All in all, no major changes from this previous season for Goodsmile Racing.
The 2017 iteration of Vocaloid character Hatsune Miku was designed by visual artist and mangaka Tony Taka, and the full livery for the car based around the character will be revealed in February.
Goodsmile Racing are one of the most popular teams in the series, supported heavily by their personal sponsorship crowdfunding arrangement.
This year will be the tenth season of Goodsmile Racing in Super GT, having first entered the series in 2008 in alliance with Studie BMW.
