2017 Super GT World Awards: GT500 Driver of the Year

Every year, Super GT World honours the most outstanding performers in the Autobacs Super GT Series with the Super GT World Awards.

The GT500 class is the pinnacle of GT racing in terms of speed and spectacle. Over thirty drivers took part this year, but only one will be recognized as the Driver of the Year, honouring the most outstanding individual driver in the GT500 category.

It is an ultra competitive field in which there are no weak links, in which every driver has earned their place on the grid by their merit. Before announcing the seven finalists including the one winner, some honourable mentions…

Super GT’s champions honoured at JAF Motorsports Awards Ceremony

This Friday, the champions of all of Japan’s major national racing championships gathered for the annual JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) Motorsports Awards Ceremony in Tokyo.

The drivers and team directors of Lexus Team KeePer TOM’s, and Goodsmile Racing with Team UKYO, were presented their awards for winning their respective classes in the 2017 Autobacs Super GT Series by the GT Association (GTA) – and they weren’t the only Super GT personalities to win awards this racing season.

NISMO dominates Motegi Grand Final; Lexus Team KeePer TOM’s win GT500 championship

From an overly eventful start to their race to a confident pole-to-win victory, no team had the measure of the #23 Motul Autech NISMO GT-R of Tsugio Matsuda and Ronnie Quintarelli – which took a landmark victory in the final round of the 2017 Autobacs Super GT Series at Twin Ring Motegi.

Quintarelli and Matsuda took their first win of the season, setting career milestones for both drivers, and for Nissan, as well as avoiding a winless 2017 campaign for the manufacturer and securing second place in the championship.

They finished ahead of the #37 KeePer TOM’s Lexus LC500 of Ryo Hirakawa and Nick Cassidy, who with their second-place finish, secured history of their own as the two drivers at 23 years old became the youngest GT500 Drivers’ Champions in history.

2017 Motegi GT Grand Final Preview: GT500 – Fight to the Finish

At the end of a journey of eight races, 3,300 kilometers of competition, over eight months, and across two countries, there is one last test. One last 250 kilometer super sprint, to crown the champions of the 2017 Autobacs Super GT Series.

For the ninth consecutive year, the Super GT season concludes in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, at the challenging Twin Ring Motegi circuit – home of the Motegi GT Grand Final.

Everything is at stake in Super GT’s final November showdown, between five of the best teams, and nine of the best drivers, in the world of sports car racing today as they battle it out in one final fight – for the right to join the roll of honour and become GT500 class champions.
