Featuring the stars of the Autobacs Super GT Series, the Super Formula Japanese Championship is heading to Sportsland Sugo for its penultimate race weekend, a 68-lap championship race that will solidify the championship picture heading into the JAF Grand Prix finale at Suzuka.
Sugo is a tight, technical circuit where overtaking may be at a premium, where qualifying position and the race start will be extremely crucial to success. But don’t think this will be an ordinary procession – Sugo’s reputation as an “action track” in Super GT also applies in Super Formula, where in 2013, Loïc Duval defeated Andre Lotterer at the line in the closest finish in series history – 0.041 seconds.
Lotterer, the defending race winner at Sugo for Vantelin Team TOM’s, is one of six drivers within reach of the championship leader, Yuji Kunimoto of p.MU/Cerumo-INGING.

The weekend saw two first-time winners from as many races, as future McLaren Honda Formula 1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne and Toyota rising star Yuji Kunimoto won their first career Super Formula races, with Kunimoto moving into a comfortable lead in the championship on the strength of two podium finishes – and on the weekend of his 26th birthday, no less! This weekend sees the first double-header race weekend of the Japanese Super Formula Championship, and a crucial one in terms of solidifying the championship picture as the 2016 season reaches the halfway point at Okayama International Circuit.
The double-header at Okayama serves not only as a replacement for the scheduled round at Autopolis that was rescheduled and relocated in the wake of the Kumamoto earthquakes, but as a make-up date for a rain-shortened Okayama round in May – a race that was stopped after just eight laps, all run under the safety car. The culmination of a furious opening stint, commanding drives at the front, a dramatic and somewhat controversial pass for the lead, and a perfectly executed final pit stop, Lexus Team ZENT Cerumo and drivers Yuji Tachikawa and Hiroaki Ishiura scored a memorable overall victory in the 45th International Suzuka 1000km endurance race, the crown jewel of the Autobacs Super GT Series calendar.
The #38 ZENT Cerumo RC-F battled the #36 au TOM’s RC-F of Daisuke Ito and Nick Cassidy throughout most of the race, swapping the lead several times including a hotly debated pass by Tachikawa on lap 129, but in the end it was the ZENT team and their red Lexus who led home a 1-2 finish for the manufacturer and scored their first win of 2016.
