2017 Super GT World Awards: Shinichi Yamaji Memorial Award

Every year, Super GT World honours the most outstanding performers in the Autobacs Super GT Series with the Super GT World Awards.

In recognition of the individuals whose contributions to the series best exemplify the positive values of sportsmanship, competition, and humanity, Super GT World presents the Shinichi Yamaji Memorial Award. It is named after veteran competitor Shinichi Yamaji (1964-2014), who defined himself and his legacy long after his passing, through a single act of courage in the 1998 All Japan GT Championship.

Gainer Mercedes-AMG charges through the pack to win at Sugo

With the right combination of determined driving, a little luck, and the right tyres for the conditions on the road, the #11 Gainer Tanax Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Katsuyuki Hiranaka and Björn Wirdheim was able to dig deep, and come back from starting 17th on the grid in Sunday’s Sugo GT 300km Race at Sportsland SUGO to win the GT300 class.

The GT300 race was one that saw a number of incidents in predominantly wet conditions, and the chaos of three Safety Car interventions during the race helped create a surprise runner-up in the #50 INGING & Arnage Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 of Akihiro Tsuzuki and Morio Nitta, who finished second ahead of the GT300 Championship leaders, the #25 VivaC Toyota 86 MC of Takamitsu Matsui & Kenta Yamashita.

NISMO leads the way at Suzuka official test

The Autobacs Super GT Series conducted its fourth and final in-season official test at Suzuka Circuit on June 30 and July 1, in preparation for next month’s Suzuka 1000km: The Final on August 27.

Over the course of two days, four sessions, and over ten hours of testing with conditions that ranged from a full wet start to a fine and dry finish, it was NISMO’s #23 Motul Autech Nissan GT-R, piloted by Tsugio Matsuda and Ronnie Quintarelli, which set the best time of both days of the test.

Quintarelli’s best time from Day 1 on Friday was followed up by the #19 WedsSport Advan Lexus LC500 of Yuhi Sekiguchi, Yuji Kunimoto, and Kamui Kobayashi setting the best time in Day 2 on Saturday.
