Former Super GT broadcaster Motors TV in huge trouble

Motors TV, one of the foremost broadcasters of international motorsport in both the United Kingdom and France, has apparently been taken off the air according to numerous reports.

The channel has been de-listed from both Sky TV and Virgin Media’s programming guides, and has now stopped broadcasting from their Astra satellite – meaning that unlike previous instances when the channel was de-listed, it is no longer accessible via manual tuning.

David Nelson of F1 Broadcasting has reported that Motors TV has been placed into the French version of receivership on May 31st due to ongoing financial issues, and now it seems unlikely that the channel will return to air.

From 2006 to 2007, Motors TV carried the Super GT series as part of its lineup of motorsport programming, headlined by the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA World Endurance Championship. Demand had been high for the series to return in subsequent years, but Super GT never seemed to fit in the plans thereafter.

For 2016, Super Formula highlights were added to Motors TV’s lineup of programming, as the series’ recent acquisitions of ex-F1 star Kamui Kobayashi and top prospect Stoffel Vandoorne, plus the international success of series veterans Andre Lotterer and Kazuki Nakajima, drove up demand for the series internationally. However, the deal may be done after just two races.

And of more importance to the racing world at large, one of the last remaining free-to-air, dedicated motorsport channels around is seemingly no longer after over a decade of broadcasting. It’s not quite over yet, but the situation isn’t looking good.
