One of Super GT’s oldest and most successful GT300 competitors, Team Taisan confirmed their 2018 plans for the Autobacs Super GT Series – and under surprising circumstances, in a press release marked for January 31 but only published this past week by their team partner, the Nagano Auto Sports Club.
Team Taisan announced that they would end their two-year collaboration with SARD Racing, with Yasutsune “Ricky” Chiba’s team reverting back to independent status and veteran driver Shinji Nakano joining the team as their managing supervisor.
They also announced that Shinnosuke Yamada would return to the team, to partner former Team Upgarage driver Shintaro Kawabata, in the #26 Taisan Audi R8 LMS for 2018.

Not even 82 additional kilograms of Success Ballast weight was going to stop young dynamo Kenta Yamashita from taking defending GT300 champions VivaC Team Tsuchiya to pole position in the biggest race of the 2017 Autobacs Super GT Series.
Despite the ballast penalty, Yamashita took his very first Super GT pole position for the 46th International Suzuka 1000km with a new course record, which will put him and his co-drivers Takamitsu Matsui and Tsubasa Kondo right at the front of the field for tomorrow’s final running of the Suzuka 1000km.
They lead a lockout of the top three places of the grid by the Toyota 86 MC by Dome, with the #18 Upgarage Bandoh 86 of Yuhki Nakayama & Shintaro Kawabata qualifying second.

The defending GT300 champions and current GT300 championship leaders kicked off their Super GT Summer Series on the right foot, as the #25 VivaC Toyota 86 MC of Takamitsu Matsui and Kenta Yamashita scored their second straight pole position of the 2017 Autobacs Super GT Series during qualifying for the Sugo GT 300km Race.
Their second pole of 2017 gives Matsui and Yamashita a bonus point in the championship heading into Sunday’s race – as they’ll lead the field to green as part of an all-Mother Chassis Toyota 86 front row.

A 15 kilogram weight reduction for the Honda NSX-GTs may not have seemed like a game changer, but one session into the Super GT in Kyushu 300km at Autopolis, Honda seem reinvigorated.
The #100 Raybrig NSX-GT of Naoki Yamamoto and Takuya Izawa led a Honda 1-2 in practice, courtesy of a blistering lap by Yamamoto in the final ten minutes of practice, ahead of the #17 Keihin NSX-GT of Koudai Tsukakoshi and Takashi Kogure.
In GT300, the #18 Upgarage Bandoh 86 (Yuhki Nakayama*/Shintaro Kawabata) led a top five dominated by the Toyota 86 MCs and the Mercedes-AMG GT3s.
