2017 Super GT World Awards: Team Director of the Year

Every year, Super GT World honours the most outstanding performers in the Autobacs Super GT Series with the Super GT World Awards.

This award is the Team Director of the Year award, given to the most outstanding team manager (or in some cases, the most outstanding chief engineer) in the Autobacs Super GT Series across both GT500 and GT300 categories. While the cars and drivers are the stars of the show, they require the guidance and direction of an effective leader!

Our six nominees were selected, and here they were, including our winner for 2017…

2017 Super GT World Awards: Shinichi Yamaji Memorial Award

Every year, Super GT World honours the most outstanding performers in the Autobacs Super GT Series with the Super GT World Awards.

In recognition of the individuals whose contributions to the series best exemplify the positive values of sportsmanship, competition, and humanity, Super GT World presents the Shinichi Yamaji Memorial Award. It is named after veteran competitor Shinichi Yamaji (1964-2014), who defined himself and his legacy long after his passing, through a single act of courage in the 1998 All Japan GT Championship.

Last year, there was a unanimous victor, this year, there were seven finalists – but only one could win the award. First, some honourable mentions…

Takeshi Tsuchiya outlines GT500 goal for VivaC Team Tsuchiya

Defending GT300 champions VivaC Team Tsuchiya are once again in the midst of a championship battle, and through a 12-month emotional roller coaster, deputy team director Takeshi Tsuchiya has taken the highs, and the lows, in confident stride.

In a recent interview with Ryuji Hirano of AUTOSPORTweb of Japan, Tsuchiya revealed that he would like to bring the team up to GT500, and compete as the sole privateer in a full-factory premier class sometime in the very near future – the team’s self-described “Road to GT500.”

K2 R&D LEON Racing make late charge to GT300 victory at Suzuka 1000km

A combination of brilliant pit strategy, and an extraordinary charge to the front of the field in the final leg of the 46th International Suzuka 1000km, helped the #65 LEON Cvstos Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Haruki Kurosawa and Naoya Gamou take a memorable GT300 class victory, in the final Suzuka 1000km as part of the Autobacs Super GT Series.

Gamou rallied back from a deficit of over ten seconds to take the lead with 9 laps to go, and drove on to take the chequered flag for K2 R&D LEON Racing after completing 158 laps in a time-shortened race.

With the 25 points earned for their victory – the first at the Suzuka summer endurance race for Mercedes in the GT300 class – Kurosawa and Gamou now lead the GT300 Drivers’ Championship by two points with two rounds remaining in the 2017 season.
