CarGuy Racing gave the home fans at Fuji International Speedway something to smile about this past weekend, when they won the first of two races in the fourth round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia this past weekend.

2012 Super GT GT300 Drivers’ Champion Naoki Yokomizo, and 2016 Super GT rookie Kei Cozzolino, capitalized on a calamitous first corner to take the lead of the race, and drive on to an improbable victory in their Lamborghini Huracán GT3, beating out some of the top full-time teams in the series – as well as some of their arch-rivals from the Super Taikyu Endurance Series.

Speed and strategy push Gasly to first Super Formula victory

The first of the vaunted 2017 Super Formula rookie class to win a race was the reigning FIA Formula 2 Champion, Pierre Gasly, who took his #15 Red Bull Team Mugen Dallara/Honda to victory at Twin Ring Motegi, the first Honda pilot to win at Motegi in nearly seven years.

Gasly beat Kamui Kobayashi, who scored KCMG’s best-ever Super Formula finish in second after leading 34 of 52 laps at the start of the race, and fellow rookie Felix Rosenqvist (Sunoco Team LeMans) picked up his second podium finish in a row – while right behind them, Hiroaki Ishiura (P.MU/Cerumo-INGING) in fourth extended his championship lead over the field after driving from 17th on the grid.

With four different winners through the first four races of the 2017 season, it’s shaping up to be another thrilling championship finale come October 22 at the JAF Grand Prix at Suzuka – and this round at Motegi will throw the teams a bit of a curveball this time out, as the series introduces the prime and option tyre dynamic for this and the following round at Autopolis on September 10.
